NetNames warns of .eu registration scams

Websites including registereu.com are offering businesses the chance to reserve .eu domain names even though no pre-registration system has been officially launched.
Registereu.com is emailing firms and inviting them to hand over their credit card details in order to secure .eu names, even though "there is no guarantee that they will qualify for that name," warns NetNames business development director Jonathan Robinson.
The European Commission has advised companies not to pre-register until registrars have been accredited. To date, the EC hasn't defined the process for accreditation, so no registrars can claim to be acting appropriately if they are accepting pre-registrations.
"There are a lot of unethical operators in the domain name industry and this is just another example of companies trying to jump the gun and get people to hand over their money," added Robinson.
"NetNames advice to consumers and businesses is that they should always deal with a reputable company, that is well-established and has the ICANN Accreditation"
It is widely believed that the new suffix will be available towards the end of 2003.
