3 and Motorola unveil MP3 phone

The new colour handset, which was jointly developed by the two companies for exclusive use on 3's network, combines a mobile phone, video and still camera, PDA, MP3 player and handheld gaming device.

It is the first of three handsets being released by 3 before the end of the year, as it tries to add to the 160,000 subscribers it has attracted to its video network since launching in April.

Previously, the company had indicated that it wanted one million users by the end of 2003 but this target now seems to be beyond its reach, though it will be hoping that an extended promotional campaign through to Christmas will boost numbers significantly.

Users of the new Motorola A920 will be able to access 3's range of video content, including Premiership highlights, music videos, film trailers and news clips.

The handset, which is based on the Symbian v7.0 operating system, also boasts a touch screen and handwriting recognition software.
