The company last week denied spamming Hotmail users but said it did send regular emails containing information based around products and services, adding that it had to communicate to its users. However, Hotmail users are unable to opt out of these promotional messages.
Hotmail users today received email inviting them to download MSN Messenger 6, in line with its policy "to inform users of updates, changes to the Hotmail service, or special news and information from MSN".
However, the mail also promotes a new pay-per play Space Invaders game hosted by the National Lottery.
Microsoft told netimperative that emails sent to Hotmail members would only contain "items directly relevant to users". The mail also contained information outlining how users can get rid of spam from Hotmail inboxes.
Microsoft earlier this year took spammers to court and said it continues to support new legislation to combat spam.
