The retailer said it experienced "strong demand in all categories", which helped boost the total number of connections by 16.5%, to one million. Subscription connections accounted for almost half of this business.

Carphone Warehouse described first quarter performance as "strong", with like-for-like sales up almost 14% and profits up 10%. "Our core businesses are performing very well, with growth in subscription connections showing a very healthy trend across the group," said Carphone Warehouse CEO Charles Dunstone.

The buoyant consumer mobile market has been reinvigorated by the launch of 3 in April and the subsequent price war it has sparked, after slashing tariffs to poach customers from other networks, in a bid to reach its stated goal of one million subscribers by the year end.

In a statement, the company suggested it had 660,000 Hutchison customers, but the figure relates to the acquisition of Hutchison Telecommunications in Germany, rather than 3 UK.
