The Securities and Exchange Commission has reportedly expanded its probe into AOL's accounting practices to look into its subscriber growth figures. The company is already being investigated for allegedly inflating advertising revenues around the time of its merger with Time Warner, but the SEC is now investigating whether the firm inflated subscriber numbers as well. According to reports, it has asked AOL to hand over documents related to a bulk subscription programme, which accounted for almost a fifth of the ISPs subscriber growth in 2001 and 2002. The news comes just a week after AOL reported that its subscriber numbers at the end of the second quarter has dropped by more than a million, compared with the previous year.
