The digital media delivery group will use its' Helix platform to allow Vodafone and its partners to offer Vodafone live! users with a range of multimedia services, with audio and video available in standards-based formats as well as as RealAudio and RealVideo.

Describing the deal as "a powerful endorsement of our technical and business approach to the rapidly expanding mobile market", RealNetworks has geared up to provide the operator video streaming services on a global scale.

The agreement allows Vodafone to broaden the Vodafone live! experience, while also reminding next-generation operator 3 of its capabilities to provide a rich content experience for users, despite having not yet rolled out its 3G network.

Vodafone indicated that it will deploy RealNetworks' technology "in a number of markets". The company operates in 28 countries and has about 112m customers around the world.

Some 1m users signed up to Vodafone live! in six months, after the service launched in October 2002.
