UK Online launches 'Get Started' campaign

Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Patricia Hewitt and e-Envoy Andrew Pinder "clicked off" the campaign in a bid to narrow the so-called 'digital divide'.

More than 8,000 online centres around the UK will from today offer free starter courses in how to make the most of the internet. Lone parents, the elderly, those on low incomes, ethnic minority groups and individuals with disabilities are among those targeted by the government.

Anyone that makes use of the free courses will be automatically entered into a prize draw, to stand a chance of winning prizes such as holidays, digital cameras and PCs.

The campaign, which will run from today until 30 June, is being supported by companies including BT, Microsoft, Intel, Expedia and Dixons.

Patricia Hewitt said: "The Get Started campaign is truly innovative and provides an excellent model for how we in government should be working with the private and voluntary sectors. Together we will not allow the digital divide to grow."
