At the end of March, the company announced that it would offer 1,500 customers of its blueyonder broadband customers using the 1Mb service a free upgrade as part of a month-long trial to test the viability and consumer demand for ultra-fast packages.

It claims that 85% of the trial customers said that the service, which is 40 times faster than dial-up and four times faster than standard broadband services, had met or exceeded their expectations.

Telewest is now offering customers three connection speeds, including standard 512kb, 1Mb and the new 2Mb service.

Existing blueyonder customers can upgrade their connection to the new service, which costs £50 a month, at no charge. New customers to Telewest will be charged £54.99 a month.

Telewest had 310,000 broadband subscribers at the end of April, about 30,000 of which have upgraded to the faster 1Mb service. It hopes to repeat this success with the even faster 2Mb service.
