The device, which will be called 'N-Gage', is thought to have been created to compete directly with Nintendo's ubiquitous Gameboy Advance, which dominates the handheld gaming market. However, with wireless connectivity it will double as a mobile phone, as it is built around Symbian's smartphone operating system.
Nokia, like many analysts, believes that games is "the next big thing in mobility", and big name developers and publishers such as Sega are already producing games for N-Gage. Games will be supplied and sold seperately on memory cards.
The company expects the new portable console to have a material impact on its second-half trading performance.
