A settlement ending the long-running dispute was filed this week at the US District Court in Seattle, although details of any costs or licence payable by Barnes & Noble were not released.
Amazon had received a patent for the one-click system, which allows online customers to place repeat orders without re-entering credit card or address information by storing billing and shipping data, a month before suing the New-York-based retailer in October 1999.
Amazon had added the feature to its site in September 1997, and had essentially accused Barnes & Noble's online subsidiary, barnesandnoble.com of copying the technology in its similar system, dubbed Express Lane.
In December 1999, Amazon received a preliminary court injunction preventing Barnesandnoble.com from using the system, but the injunction was then overruled in February last year.
