PanSec, which officially launched this month, provides regular automated security monitoring of customer Web applications as an application service. Broadly, the service checks the kinds of vulnerabilities that hackers and viruses use when attacking Web applications.
At present, PanSec offers two packages: NodeScan, which targets individual IP addresses, and NetScan, for a range of multiple addresses. NodeScan is designed to first perform a TCP and UDP port scan on up to 131,070 ports - the entry points used to communicate with internet applications - to determine their status and the Operating System they are running.
The initial probe is followed by a check on Web or Mail servers for known weaknesses and any additional open ports tested for so-called Trojans or Backdoor vulnerabilities. Reports in a choice of formats can then be generated, incorporating user-defined baselines and exceptions to cut down the volume of data. NetScan uses the same technology but scaled up to cover multiple IP addresses. NodeScan and NetScan can be run at daily, weekly or monthly intervals.
The company aims to combine partnerships with a direct marketing strategy.
R&D director Geoff Brown was a founder of CKS, an Independent Software Vendor that was subsequently acquired by Axent Technologies.
