The trials confirm that cable operator NTL is looking at alternative technologies for delivering broadband services. Head of media relations Malcolm Padley confirmed that wireless is “one of a number of broadband options that we're trialling”.
The equipment to be used in the trials was developed by St. Albans-based Ogier Electronics Ltd. It transmits data via wireless access modules (WAM) and can interface with conventional cable equipment at the subscriber and hub ends. Users should be able to access services at the same speed as cable modems.
The trials will take place in Croydon, Gunnserbury, Wandsworth, Crystal Palace and at Guy's Hospital and will last until the end of November.
Ogier Electronics develop microwave transmission technologies for CCTV and train video applications, but are now focusing on developing low-cost broadband solutions for the residential market.
