The service essentially adds location-based services (LBS) to Digital Rum's Wireless Shopping Platform, and is apparently to be available in the UK, France, Germany and Spain initially. Although both technologies are seeing a sluggish take-up, industry analysts agree that transactions and LBS will combine to provide a potent revenue source in the future.
According to the companies, a consumer can now comparison shop via their mobile device as well as locate the nearest retailer for the product. Webraska is to provide its mapping and route planning technology, while Digital Rum is to handle the transaction side and vendor integration and product / merchant database management.
Digital Rum claims clients including Virgin, Mviva, Eircell and Telefonica, while Webraska's technology has been implemented by companies including IBM, Nortel, Oracle and Openwave.
