However, the report from the 3G industry body avoids mentioning exactly how much has currently been invested in the technology globally, making the decline in individual user revenue a potentially concerning situation for operators.
According to the UMTS forum report, “The Third Generation Market: Structuring the Service Revenue Opportunities,” 30% of the world will use mobile services in nine years' time, 28% of these will be 3G users.
The report estimates initial 3G take up to provide revenues of $50bn by 2005, rising to $270bn in 2007 - a worrying figure for companies such as Vodafone and BT, which have invested far more than $50bn already. The Forum believes that data services will represent 66% of revenues by 2010.
Global revenue from mobile services is now $270bn per year - the Forum predicts a considerable increase, with $322bn coming in from 3G subscribers alone by 2010. Voice revenues are expected to decline by 10% a year, according to the report.
