Although on and offline smart card deployments have met with some success in Europe and the US, the UK has so far dragged its feet in this area.
Gemplus, one of the largest smart card manufacturers, will provide card personalization, issuance and logistics, while IBM will bring systems integration capabilities and Chip Management System solutions.
According to the companies, the main focus of this deal is to deploy a Smart Card Life Cycle Management Application, which should allow users to add or delete entire applications directly onto the smart card.
It will also allow control of card applications such as the addition of new Public and Private Keys and payment or loyalty applications, said the companies.
