Matsushita, Lucent and Nortel to test 3G devices

Added:
Nov 30, 2000

According to the companies, testing will include Matsushita's multi-mode GSM/GPRS/UMTS 3G mobile terminals, to be marketed under the Panasonic brand. This should enable Panasonic users to roam between networks with their UMTS phones, something currently impossible with single-mode UMTS phones, such as those currently deployed by Manx Telecom in the Isle of Man. Without this roaming ability, users would face the possibility of losing their connection in areas without full 3G coverage - likely to be most areas other that central business districts.

The move follows a strategy mapped out by Matsushita to boost its global phone handset market share to 15% by 2004 from 5.5% at the end of June. The company has a strong foothold in Japan, having already developed video-enabled mobiles, but lags behind Nokia and Motorola in Europe.

Testing is due to begin in Paris early next year, said the companies, although handset manufacturers have pledged to have the multi-mode devices on the market by early 2002.
