iPlanet goes wireless

Added:
Oct 31, 2000

According to the company, the platform is an amalgamation of two new iPlanet Messaging and Calendar servers, and current versions of the iPlanet Wireless and Directory servers. The platform is aimed at high-end service providers, ISPs and ASPs, and represents a closer integration of current technologies, according to the company.

The iPlanet Messaging Server 5.0 is a notification API (application programming interface) for SMS, which should allow users to receive alerts over their mobiles. Also, the company said that the iPlanet Wireless Server will handle the WAP content delivery side of things. The Messaging Server also can handle streaming video and audio through a plug-in, according to the company, although there are few applications and fewer wireless devices that support or require this functionality at the moment.

The components of the Intelligent Communications Platform are currently available separately, while bundled packaging starting in January. Pricing for versions 5.0 of the iPlanet Messaging and Calendar servers starts at $3 per user, with the iPlanet Wireless Server pricing at $7 per user.

Companies such as Orange.net, Vodafone, Vivao and Cisco currently use various components of the platform, such as the Wireless server. Razorfish has also announced a marketing deal off the back of this platform, aiming to integrate the solution for Fortune 100 companies.
