The agreement will see Kingfisher distributing Freeserve's narrowband and broadband access CD-ROMs in its 87 MVC entertainment stores and in turn giving the portal access to MVC's 5m registered membership.
Kingfisher's general merchandise retail brands, which include the Woolworth's store chain, will be granted ad space across the portal as part of the deal.
Freeserve's current arrangements with Kingfisher include an exclusive partnership deal with content providers Superdrug and ThinkNatural.com. Kingfisher owns Superdrug, which is a major backer of ThinkNatural.com. This agreement will continue in the development of a new health channel, which was due for launch this autumn.
Significantly, the agreement will also see Freeserve voting in favour of the proposal by Kingfisher to acquire an 85% majority holding of entertainment e-tailer Streets Online. Freeserve owns 14% of Streets Online and will have major voting rights over the Kingfisher proposal.
The agreement underlines Kingfisher's proposed strategy, announced earlier this year, to make 40m of its 200m direct sales over the internet.
