Initially, the new site will be housed on the BBC's existing Euro2000 website, which yesterday recorded 900,000 page impressions, according to a BBC spokesman.
Subsequently, all of BBC Online's sports content will be folded into the new site, which will cover a comprehensive range of sports and is expected to make extensive use of multimedia content.
Sport is shaping up to be pivotal in the battle for online audiences, and the BBC is up against BSkyB, which is seeking to acquire Sports Internet Group, to run alongside its skysports.com site; as well as major sports website networks including Sportal and 365 Corporation.
BBC announced in February that it would launch the new sports site. At the time it was expected that it would be live in time for Euro2000.
