In order to try and avoid technical glitches, the service will be made available to subscribers in stages over the coming weeks.
An AltaVista spokesperson said: “The service will be rolled out over the next 6-8 weeks - Alta Vista has decided to take a managed approach.”
Alta Vista's announcement in March that it was to launch an unmetered access package shook up the internet access market.
At that point, Alta Vista said that it expected to launch the package within three months of its 6 March announcement. The company also said that it would initially limit the number of subscribers to 500,000.
The service, being provided in partnership with the ISP, Claranet, costs 51 plus VAT.
