The service will allow anti-virus developers to pool their resources and expertise to protect end-users from the threat of rapidly spreading viruses.
REVS is based on a secure Sophos server, and encrypts and forwards a secure copy of 'urgent' viruses to all participating anti-virus developers within minutes of a rapidly spreading virus being discovered.
Dr Jan Hruska, technical director for Sophos Anti-Virus, said that it is essential for anti-virus researchers get samples as soon as possible.
Management of encryption and sample exchange is controlled by custom-built WildList software. When a virus is identified, a sample is encrypted, signed with a key and then sent to the REVS server. The system forwards the sample to list participants, encrypting it for each individual recipient.
The service is free of charge to companies that produce anti-virus products.
