The survey found that while handheld devices are becoming common, they are still largely a professional tool with approximately 70% or more of usage cited for business purposes.
Currently Hewlett-Packard is the number-one vendor for both current and potential PC companion users, with Bluetooth the preferred means of file synchronisation.
The survey also revealed that there has been a change in the preferred purchase methods for handhelds. During 1997-1998 the most popular ways to buy were from computer product superstores and mail-order catalogues but last year this changed to manufacturer direct purchases - either through sales representatives or websites.
IDC attributes this change to several factors, the most important being the cost saving involved in buying direct. Increasing consumer awareness of handheld devices is another factor with less need for product education causing more people to buy direct.
