The Welsh village of Crumlin in Caerphilly is the latest trial site for a new means of delivering broadband services. Virgin Media is working in conjunction with power company Surf Telecoms to provide fibre optic broadband services via electricity poles.
The trial delivers services of up to 50Mbps in addition to Virgin's cable TV services and follows an earlier trial this year in the Berkshire town of Woolhampton. The previous trial used a purpose built system to carry the cables, but this is the first time Virgin have used the existing infrastructure to carry the network.
Virgin Media has also said that it intends to offer 100Mbps broadband services via its cable network by the end of 2010.
