Business- based social network LinkedIn celebrates its sixth birthday this week, with a landmark 40m members worldwide and 10m in Europe.
The professional networking site has added 250,000 new UK members in the last two months alone. With 2.25m members in the UK. The are 500,000 members in London alone.
In the UK, LinkedIn has seen a 40% rise in members from the recruitment and staffing sector as employers seek alternate ways to search for fresh talent.
More than 30% of LinkedIn’s total European membership comes from the IT, banking/finance and marketing/advertising sectors.
Founded in 2003 by serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur Reid Hoffman, the site has attracted some of the most influential business people worldwide including representatives of all five hundred of the Fortune 500 companies and the vast majority of the FTSE 100.
The site is also proving a barometer for the changing dynamics of international business development. Emerging economies are showing some of the fastest growth in membership, with India now boasting 2m members.
