CNN has taken over the popular @cnnbrk Twitter account, gaining almost a million followers in the process.
The US news broadcaster confirmed it has taken control of the CNNbrk account, which is currently in a race with celebrity Ashton Kutcher to be the first Twitter feed to attain one million followers.
The account, owned by London-based web developer James Cox, is the largest on Twitter with more than 947,000 followers.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Ashton Kutcher was in second place with 917,000 followers, followed closely by Britney Spears, who has about 913,000 followers.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but as Twitter prohibits the sale of accounts, CNN said the move is not an "acquisition".
Instead, the company has hired James Cox on a consultant contract agreement, which included the transfer of the account as part of its conditions.
The company said any financial compensation due to Cox is being offered for his services, which includes his Twitter account along with teaching social media workshops.
